The weird thing is it has USE="-X". Also, seems to compile fine without the gentoo patches.

Patches are not always compile time dependencies. Some might be also runtime. I have close contact to upstream, so all fixes beside the build system or live system changes are directly taken from upstream.

I will take a look into the missing header thing. Meanwhile just emerge libX11.

If you really like to have a non X version, please come up with a patch.
