Description Julien Sanchez archtester 2011-06-10 10:54:17 UTC
GPU accelerated 2D Canvas is now enabled by default in dev branch but this accelerated mode is slower (about both felt "smoothness" and displayed framerates) than software mode on my system (nvidia video card with proprietary driver).

Below the URL and the command I use to test (with an empty profile for more consistency):

* http://www.smashcat.org/av/canvas_test/
* rm -rf  && mkdir /tmp/chromium/ && chromium-live --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas --user-data-dir=/tmp/chromium/ http://www.smashcat.org/av/canvas_test/

=> when using --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas, framerate indicator displays ~80+fps and smooth feeling
=> without --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas (so GPU accelerated), framerate indicator displays about 30+fps but it feels more like 5 fps or less.

Despite its appearance, this canvas test does not use WebGL (no 3d context) but I think some slowness in accelerated webgl tests may be related: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=348841

There's an upstream "fixed" bug about slow accelerated canvas (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=71644) with 2 other canvas tests but I'm not so sure it's really fixed:
* http://clients.nicholaswellcome.com/side_scroller/
FPS are irrelevant here because there are the same (accelerated canvas or not) but felt smoothness is far better in software mode
* http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16145652/flying/flying.html
Not very useful for me

Before to report upstream, I would like to know if I'm the only one who have this issue on Gentoo systems.

floppym's emerge --info

I just gave this a go on my system, and I'm seeing normal behavior.

~70 fps with disable-accelerated-2d-canvas
~210 fps without disable-accelerated-2d-canvas
Comment 3 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2011-06-26 18:14:52 UTC
Oh, that is using 14.0.802.0 (Developer Build 90334 Linux).
Comment 4 Julien Sanchez archtester 2011-07-13 09:48:17 UTC
Upstream bug link (marked as fixed but not really fixed):
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=71644
Comment 5 Julien Sanchez archtester 2011-08-24 09:50:28 UTC
Not resolved upstream.

Please see my comment with attached profiling output files with both accelerated and non-accelerated canvas flag:

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=71644#c22

Any hint about the problem? nvidia driver?
