Description Brian Olsen 2002-06-13 17:11:01 UTC
I've had problems with kernel stability using 1.1a and 1.3.

Package is:

gentoo-sources: 2.4.19-r7

Problems:
Machine IO locks after a while. Shows up randomly, mostly while building.
Numlock key still works but system is totally unresponsive.

Saw this on the following 2 systems (repeatedly):
Dual P3 600 w/BX chipset and Seagate SCSI drives with a Symbios controller.
K6-2 500 system with IDE Seagate drive.

I rebuilt the systems on both witout XFS and the problems went away.

try turning off preempt or similar. Preempt seems to be troublesome on SMP.
Comment 2 Paul Wollner 2002-08-26 06:27:01 UTC
I am experiencing the exact same problems. With and without preempt. Strange
thing on 2 of the systems it appears to be rock solid, and on another two it is
extremely flaky. I have ruled out hardware problems, as I replaced both
machines hardware. The machines that die are 1Ghz Celerons, 256MB ram, Onboard
Intel NIC, and an additional 3COM NIC.

reopen if still broken
