When I type "vlc" at an X terminal window the result is usually

VideoLAN Client 0.6.2 Trevelyan
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x37)!
Xlib: sequence lost (0x10000 > 0x37) in reply type 0x3!

Occassionally it does start the application correctly.

did you try to recompile ?

I have not recompiled vlc.  But I have done an rsync which did not update vlc directly.  Still vlc is working fine right now, having tried it again for the first time in a month.  Cannot explain it.
