Comment 1 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2011-05-22 12:48:19 UTC
FWIW boinc_client itself runs fine (I started it - but unfortunately as root) - it is the init.d script which doesn't work.
Comment 2 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2011-05-22 12:56:34 UTC
After I changed this lines, it seems to work now :

                --exec "${BOINCBIN}" -- --daemon

I get exactly the same problem, but the solution provided is not clear to me. No change to original line in the init.d script:
--exec "${BOINCBIN}" ${PARAMS}
that looked like the one you give worked for me. In any case, I agree the problem is the init.d script. Debug output:

# /etc/init.d/boinc --debug start
[...]
* Starting BOINC ...
+ create_work_directory
+ '[' '!' -d /var/lib/boinc ']'
+ cuda_check
+ '[' -f /opt/cuda/lib/libcudart.so ']'

+ RESULT=0
+ eend 0                                                                                                                                                                                                                               [ ok ]
++ command -v start_post
+ '[' '' = start_post ']'
+ shift
+ continue 2
+ '[' -n '' ']'
 * start-stop-daemon: unable to open the logfile for stdout `'/var/log/boinc.log'': No such file or directory

The old chrt way of doing the init.d script (version 6.10.58-r1) seemed to work fine. Perhaps go back to that?

Note the extra "--" to distinguish between parameters for the Gentoo's daemon scripts and the arguments dedicated for boinc_clients's comamnd line.
Comment 5 Julien Enche 2011-05-22 15:18:32 UTC
Another way to solve this is to remove the ' character around ${LOGFILE} in these lines :

if [ -n "${RC_UNAME}" ]; then
                PARAMS="--background --stdout ${LOGFILE} --stderr ${LOGFILE} -- ${ARGS}"
        else
                PARAMS="-- ${ARGS} >> ${LOGFILE} 2>&1"
        fi

The fix from Julien works perfectly for me. I figured the quotes were needed in case the log file name included spaces, but mine doesn't (and perhaps that is not what the quotes are there for anyway. Thanks!

Removing the ' character around ${LOGFILE} seems to be the _right_ fix.
Worked for me.
Comment 8 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2011-05-23 14:22:50 UTC
with sci-misc/boinc-6.12.26-r1 I get :

n22 ~ # /etc/init.d/boinc stop
 * Stopping boinc ...
Authorization failure: -155                                                                                       [ !! ]
Comment 9 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2011-05-23 14:26:46 UTC
maybe an empty password should be handled in this way :

        if [[ -n "${password}" ]]; then
                su -m ${USER} -c "boinccmd --passwd ${password} --quit"
        else
                su -m ${USER} -c "boinccmd --quit"
        fi
        eend $?

but at least this line is wrong :

su -m ${USER} -c "boinccmd --passwd "${password}" --quit"

b/c the inner double quotes should be quoted like \", isn't it ?
Comment 10 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-23 14:41:57 UTC
Should be fixed by -r1.
Comment 11 Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2011-05-23 17:09:27 UTC

NO, I tested sci-misc/boinc-6.12.26-r1
