The beta 2.6-based LiveCD will not boot on x86 machines equiped with the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard. The reason for this is the PnPBIOS option in the kernel behaves badly with this motherboard (and possibly other derivitives), causing a GPF and Kernel panic. I was able to install Gentoo on my machine only by using the 2.4 LiveCD, then building my own 2.6.0 kernel and removing the PnP BIOS support from the Kernel. Any possibility a "NO PnP BIOS" boot option or kernel could be added to the 2.6 LiveCD? Anyways, wanted to report this since the Asus P4C800-E is becoming a pretty popular board, and I don't want people having trouble installing Gentoo on their brand new kit! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard 2. Try to boot the latest experimental 2.6-based LiveCD, preferably with nofb to see the panic in all its glory Actual Results: GPF, Kernel Panic, system locked Expected Results: Booted happily
You can try booting with "gentoo pnpbios=off" or "nofb pnpbios=off"
try the new catalyst built cds - http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/experimental/x86/livecd/ Use the 2004.0 versions.
