Description tarek 2011-05-17 10:33:40 UTC
On an old Dell GX270, with EXT4 / filesystem on its SATA iface,
kernel hangs on boot at init stage.

No errors.
Last message is of init_early.sh, so openrc rc sysinit script must have started.

Do not get to the coloured openrc message so fault occurs prior. Not sure if fault is init or openrc failing.

No problems on alternate hardware....just this machine.

1)Have tried various kernels with no difference. Currently gentoo-sources 2.6.38-r8
2) Have tried both grub and grub2 with no change

init=/bin/bash kernel parameter works, so fs is mounted ok

can then bootstrap rest of system with
 rc sysint
 exec init
in that order from the bash command

just an
 exec init
fails reproducing identical hang

This is decidedly odd

As a workaround:
1) create a bash script to do the above
2) launch the bash script as kernel parameter

System then boots and runs ok

Standard minimal install CD boots fine, as do other initrd based boots eg gparted iso etc.

Hopefully it is me having done something stupid or missing something. Any hints welcome.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Boot Hangs - still responds to caps lock/usb events etc

Expected Results:
Boot

These Dells cannot run run SATA in compat mode (no bios option)
Have checked fs integrity
Have tried sysvinit -static
Have tried playing with rc.c to vary behaviour with no result.
Kernel config must be acceptable as I can bootstrap fine once I get bash up.

Please post your `emerge --info' output too.
Comment 2 William Hubbs gentoo-dev 2011-05-18 04:25:34 UTC
Also, there is not any information in this bug about what is being
displayed when the system hangs.

We need to know that as well.

Please feel free to re-open when you can provide more information.

Thanks,

William

This is kernel messages (via dmesg) near point of hang (with init=/bin/bash as I don't have console attached)

[ 5.476464] EXT4-fs (sda3): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

At this point it hangs - no further messages unless you hotplug USB devices

/dev/sda3 is the root partition

It seems to be that

rc sysinit

appears to be firing up something that is needed for init to then be able to start properly.

I'm only curious to see if I can work out what is happening, and as I have a simple workaround I am not under any pressure.

This seems to be an outlier on this hardware but finding a solution may assist someone else. (see link)

The machine is only my 7yr olds new machine, recycled from my companies scrap pile due to the famous burst caps, which were promptly replaced.

I won't load up kernel .config unless its requested.

Other things tried in kernel build - ext4 only driver for ext2/ext3 (currently all are back)
Various kernel options eg downgrading processor type from P4 to earlier
With HT and without
GPT partition table with EFID instead of msdos type
With an without FB support (VESA) in case font stuff was giving grief
Comment 8 Guilherme Andrade 2011-06-12 16:42:12 UTC
This happens to me as well. Currently using vanilla-sources 2.6.39 and a desktop profile, but I can confirm it also happened about a month ago with a hardened kernel and a hardened profile (and I've since done a clean reinstall).
However, I also tried Debian Squeeze's (testing) 2.6.38 kernel, and I have *no problem whatsoever* booting with it - so I guess it must be a kernel config
issue, though so far I've been unable to find out what might be misplaced.

tarek's workaround (init using the bash script) worked for me as well.

Root partition is Ext4. No separate /boot, and most of the drivers are built into the kernel (very few modules); no initrd, too.

Since we're not able to reproduce this, can you guys please add some debug print/echo calls to e.g. /lib/rc/sh/init-early.sh?
Just to see whether it leaves the init-early or not and if it does then check the next ones till you find anything that could help us to fix the issue.

At the time I improvised a dirty fix and left it like that until now; I've just found this: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-880149.html?sid=7de597df34c53ddac05ecde28596c507

I don't know how I missed it then but it's all good now.

Ok, pleas re-open in case it's still persistent.
