Description Guillaume Lapierre 2011-05-16 15:15:10 UTC
I updated my server which I did not for a long time.
In the update I upgraded GCC following instructions in gentoo documentation.

In the process it needs to update busybox from 1.13.2 to 1.17.4.

The problem is the linker cannot find -luuid whereas it is present in /usr/lib64 (libuuid.a and libuuid.so). I emerged e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs just to be sure but it does not seems to help.

Google was of little help as well.

I probably have something wrong in my config but could not find out what it is and your help is welcome.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
run emerge busybox

Expected Results:
busybox compiled and system upgraded!

You should update more often - libuuid is now provided by util-linux.

Most likely INVALID.

I will try to emerge util-linux, thanks.
Comment 4 Guillaume Lapierre 2011-05-16 16:01:26 UTC
Looks like util-linux is already uptodate:

kimsufi ~ # emerge -av util-linux

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Rebuilt util-linux (timestamp on /usr/lib64/libuuid* changed): OK
Trying to build busybox: I still get the same error!
Comment 7 Rafał Mużyło 2011-05-16 18:34:46 UTC
OK, attach a build log with V=1, so the failing command can be seen.
Comment 8 Guillaume Lapierre 2011-05-16 21:34:10 UTC
Not quite sure on how to "enable" this V=1.
Tried:

V=1;emerge -v busybox

But the resulting build.log is similar to the one already attached?

The revelant part seems to be:

Comment 9 Rafał Mużyło 2011-05-17 00:05:36 UTC
'V=1 emerge busybox' should work, if not, go into WORKDIR and and do 'make V=1'.
Comment 10 taaroa 2011-05-17 02:32:49 UTC
Don't report bugs to gentoo if you've emerged using ccache. Turn it off, and try again. There're many reports of compilation failure due to corrupt cache.

Can you post your environment file?

Bogus.

While on occasions ccache related failures happen, usually it's completely harmless.

environment file wn't tell much atm, as without full linking command it's hard to tell where the failure comes from (it might be a stale symlink or old version of the lib, but only the command can tell).
Comment 12 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-17 11:03:04 UTC
You should be able to slip V=1 into MAKEOPTS.
Comment 13 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-17 11:06:22 UTC
Doing that here, I find that the busybox build doesn't refer to libuuid.so at all, so this is probably something to do with libtool files.

Please run `lafilefixer --justfixit' and try again.
Comment 14 Guillaume Lapierre 2011-05-17 11:13:54 UTC
Reviewing /etc/make.conf I probably found the problem:

LDFLAGS="-luuid"

Still do not know how it make its way there... trying to emerge busybox again and I will keep you posted!
Comment 15 Guillaume Lapierre 2011-05-17 12:21:45 UTC
OK my mistake (as I thought it could be!)

I managed to emerge busybox after removing LDFLAGS="-luuid" in my /etc/make.conf

I probably needed it some time ago and forgot to remove it!

I close the bug and thank you everyone for the time spent on this one.
