I think a segfault from gcc generally points to bad memory (RAM). Can you run memtest for a few hours to see if you get any errors?
Comment 2 Norman Shulman 2011-05-13 18:26:30 UTC
(In reply to comment #1)
I'll run it overnight.
Comment 3 Norman Shulman 2011-05-13 19:55:36 UTC
Reran the emerge command and it completed successfully, so this may well be a memory problem.
Comment 4 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2011-05-13 20:52:56 UTC
Okay. Reopen if you get a consistent failure.
Comment 5 Norman Shulman 2011-05-17 12:14:22 UTC
Left memtest86+ running Friday night; workstation rebooted on Saturday.

Started memtest86+ last night; still running when I came in this morning, no errors.
Comment 6 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2011-05-17 14:11:49 UTC
Ok. Can you reproduce the compiler error?
Comment 7 Norman Shulman 2011-05-18 17:17:16 UTC
No; I re-emerged chromium overnight without error.

> No; I re-emerged chromium overnight without error.

By the way, I think it was ccache.
Comment 9 Norman Shulman 2011-05-20 18:05:14 UTC
How can ccache cause an internal compiler error? Presumably everything in ccache has already been through the compiler without error.

Thanks.

ccache is of course only a guess, but I've seen cases where cache corruption was leading to strange errors later (usually on linking).
