Stab in the dark: see bug 351897, then bug 353224.
Comment 3 Michael Mol 2011-05-09 10:22:48 UTC
06:20:53 $ python -c 'import gtk, uuid; print (uuid.uuid1().hex)'
08b6d4bc7a2611e0a65800248c6e516a

06:20:59 $ python -c 'import cairo, uuid; print (uuid.uuid1().hex)'
2c9100f67a2611e09b0000248c6e516a

So no segfault there. Still looking at the second bug you mentioned.
Comment 4 Michael Mol 2011-05-09 10:31:55 UTC
I can reproduce bug 353224, via Martin von Gagern's shell script, though it also closes my terminal; Running ./demo reveals:

06:26:50 $ verbose() { echo "$*"; "$@"; }
shortcircuit@serenity~
06:27:15 $ verbose ./demo
./demo

Comment 5 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2011-05-13 02:01:03 UTC
Looking at line 156 of util-linux-2.19/shlibs/uuid/src/gen_uuid.c, it is an assignment to a jrand_seed variable that's declared THREAD_LOCAL, so it seems consistent with bug 353224.
Comment 6 Michael Mol 2011-05-13 13:33:02 UTC
I'll try the patch mentioned in that bug ('http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=261104'), probably tomorrow, and report back.
Comment 7 Michael Mol 2011-05-14 13:18:38 UTC
That patch does fix the bug.
Comment 8 Jonas Stein gentoo-dev 2017-05-21 22:27:48 UTC
What is the status of this bug? Can we close it?
Comment 9 Michael Mol 2017-05-22 13:04:36 UTC
The bug was fundamentally in glibc, and patches queued up for glibc 2.12.2 and 2.13. Oldest version in tree is now 2.17, so it's safe to say this has been fixed. Anyone still hitting it hasn't updated their glibc in six years...
