Description Charles Nérot 2011-05-03 11:10:13 UTC
media-libs/libcanberra-0.28-r1 with udev flag need alsa.

This line has been hadded between media-libs/libcanberra-0.26 and media-libs/libcanberra-0.28-r1
> REQUIRED_USE="udev? ( alsa )"

I am not using alsa but oss. So I cannot update to libs/libcanberra-0.28-r1...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. global use flag in make.con: -alsa +oss +udev
2. emerge media-libs/libcanberra

Actual Results:
emerge -1 media-libs/libcanberra
superuser access is required... adding --pretend to options

!!! Problem resolving dependencies for media-libs/libcanberra

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "media-libs/libcanberra" has unmet requirements.
- media-libs/libcanberra-0.28-r1 USE="gstreamer gtk gtk3 (multilib) oss sound udev -alsa -pulseaudio -tdb"

  The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    udev? ( alsa )

Expected Results:
emerge ok without alsa flag.

wow, also support in udev...
Comment 2 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-03 15:44:07 UTC
meh, I actually meant, that I did this change on purpose, that's what canberra configure.ac says.
Comment 3 Charles Nérot 2011-05-05 11:13:24 UTC
I'm looking for the need of alsa when enabling udev in libcanberra configure.ac. I don't find any reference.

And everything seems to be ok with this patch:
diff -u /usr/portage/media-libs/libcanberra/libcanberra-0.28-r1.ebuild libcanberra-0.28-r1.ebuild

I'm sorry to reoppen this defect but I want to understand...
Comment 4 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-05 13:02:38 UTC
The canberra-boot.c file (which is enabled by udev USE flag says:

        if ((r = ca_context_set_driver(c, "alsa")) < 0) {
                fprintf(stderr, "Failed to set driver: %s\n", ca_strerror(r));
                goto finish;
        }

That's the only working setup. Don't enable udev if you don't want alsa support.
Comment 5 Oleg 2011-10-16 15:25:05 UTC
Can you merge "udev" and "alsa" flags?
Comment 6 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-10-16 15:45:15 UTC
There is no point in merging the flags as each flag provides a different feature.
The fact that alsa depends on udev is only because the feature enabled here is early sound in boot sequence.
