I frequently use gentoo live dvd iso files as the bootable cd image for a new install of a kvm virtual machine in virt-manager. The trouble is that the default i/o model for newer distros (first noticed this playing with fedora 12) is the use of the virtio disk and net driver. Thus after booting the gentoo iso, I don't have any disk devices to work with. I work around this by falling back to another driver such as the scsi one, but then I need to flip it back later when running the guest o/s for real. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use the gentoo live dvd iso as the cd-rom image for booting a guest in kvm 2. 3. Actual Results: No /dev/vda drive to work with Expected Results: /dev/vda, etc found in /dev/disk/by-path n/a
Why don't you use the minimal CD to install on a VM? What advantage is there in using a >2GB iso to install on a virtualization environment? The minimal CD does have support for the virtio drivers. We can update the kernel specs, though.
Didn't catch that it was in the minimal cd. I typically have the full live DVD's in my walkaround bag, so that is what I tended to dump or download when working with guests.
@ten: Do we want to "worry" with the dvd being used in server / virtualization environments or should users use the installcd for those?

I'll add support for it as it shouldn't cause any maintenance issues. I'll report back here with link to iso which has support for it.
New testing image has been added with virtio drivers. see #gentoo-ten for more info.
I'm dropping the release alias from here.
adding block on livedvd tracker
fixed and will be included on new livedvd this month.
this is missing on 12.1 but if you still need it, you are free to enable them and recompile the kernel as a workaround for now.
13.0 livedvd will have this, reopen if you encounter issues.
