Description Miguel de Val-Borro 2011-05-01 16:22:42 UTC
There is a time out and an error message on many webpages. For example the AMD64 handbook cannot be retrieved:

 Unable to retrieve http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml:

I tried on stable x86 and unstable amd64 and the current portage versions seem to work. The information you've provided are not enough to process this bug. Please submit your "emerge -pv elinks" output and any relevant information you think might be helpful. Also check your network/firewall settings*. I resolve this as NEEDINFO. Reopen (UNCONFIRMED) only if you still think this is a bug of our side and you have submitted more information.

*eg. on the same machine, lynx or other http clients work without problems?
Comment 2 Miguel de Val-Borro 2011-05-03 14:44:33 UTC
This is the output from "emerge -pv elinks" on my system. This bug is present in the current stable amd64 version. Other http clients such as lynx and firefox seem to work well.

[ebuild R ] www-client/elinks-0.11.7 USE="X bzip2 gpm idn ipv6 javascript nls perl ssl unicode zlib -bittorrent -debug -finger -ftp -gopher -guile -lua -nntp -ruby" 0 kB

Reassigning to maintainer for further investigation. It would be helpful if you tried to emerge an unstable version of elinks and report if it works or you still get the same error(-s).
Comment 4 Miguel de Val-Borro 2011-05-03 17:45:18 UTC
I have emerged the unstable amd64 version of elinks in Portage and it works fine to load the URL http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml.

# emerge -pv elinks

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] www-client/elinks-0.12_pre5-r1 USE="X bzip2 gpm idn ipv6 javascript mouse nls perl ssl unicode zlib -bittorrent -debug -finger -ftp -gopher -guile -lua -nntp -ruby -samba" 0 kB

The "Error reading from socket" message only appears in the stable amd64 version www-client/elinks-0.11.7.

Could you please try editing the build file, replacing line 88 to read:
' --without-zlib \', then running ebuild elinks-0.11.7.ebuild manifest and reemerging elinks?

With this change in the ebuild, the stable version elinks-0.11.7 works fine for me on amd64.
Comment 7 Michal Januszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-06-12 16:21:42 UTC
Thanks confirming, zlib is now disabled in the ebuild.
