portage should move the whole folder, eg.: /var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.38.4/image/usr/src/linux-2.6.38.4 to the destination folder /usr/src/linux-2.6.38.4 if the later doesn't exist before to speed up the "Installing" part.
