I am using latest ~arch gnome desktopn and X-Server + nvidia-drivers When maximizing windows in X-1.10 the gnome panel gets black until it gets refreshed, by update of an apllet or hovering with the mouse , see Screenshot.

Does that happen with nouveau too?
I don't know.
So test is finished: X-1.10 + Metacity being not a composite manager + nvidia > bad behaviour X-1.9 + Metacity being not a composite manager + nvidia > good behaviour X-1.10 + Metacity being a composite manager + nouveau > good behaviour X-1.10 + Metacity being a composite manager + nvidia > good behaviour
I'm going to blame nvidia drivers since it all looks good with intel here.
To be precise, I'm running xorg-server-1.10.901 with x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.14.1 (r200) and my dual PIII and x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.14.0 on my amd64 (i965) and none show the problem.
Interesting this does not happen everywhere.
I've also noticed this behavior.
Exactly I've got: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-270.41.06 x11-base/xorg-server-1.10.1.901 Problem occurs when gnome OSD pops up (Gajim notices). Also, when I'm watching videos on youtube, video invades through text in context menu (RMB)
I see something similar running xfce. Under some circumstances, and I believe it's generally related to transient informational popups, portions of the screen are left black. I force a repaint by switching to a different virtual desktop. The blacked, unpainted area is usually part of the top xfce panel - used for status and minimized icons - the launcher is on the bottom, though I have seen some unpainted areas below the panel. This is with stable xfce and Xorg with nvidia-drivers. I've most often seen the failed repaint with transient information windows popped up by cups/hplip. (Job started, job stopped, etc.) I believe compositing is turned on - at least I haven't turned it off, but I don't believe xfce is using it. I don't believe it's just GNOME.
Have you retested with newer versions?
As stated in the last comment, pleas retest with newer versions. It should be resolved.
