The dependencies of kde-base/mplayerthumbs should be updated with the addition of package mplayer2 as an alternative to mplayer. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install mplayer2 2.Try to install kde-base/mplayerthumbs 3.Portage tries to install mplayer

Exactly. I've removed the entire mplayer dependency (and the mplayer useflag) from mplayerthumbs; by default phonon is used for generating thumbnails. If you want to use mplayer or mplayer2 as generator, just emerge it and set it in mplayerthumbsconfig.
