There's an update for sci-chemistry/pymol-plugins-dssp only a few hours later its creation :)
The new features are described by the author himself in the provided URL:

The plugin has been updated s.t. it now also recognizes objects. The 
support for single-word selectors ('polymer', 'all', etc) is also added.

I think we had a misunderstanding here :)

The original dssp_pymol.py plugin was updated just after the pymol-plugins-dssp-110412.ebuild was added to the tree. The new plugin has object support, as I mentioned when opening this bug.
