Description gary artim 2011-04-13 01:53:46 UTC
udev 151 will not compile.

would provide more info, but without udev I have no fluxbox and cut/paste the conventional way.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge sys-fs/udev
2.
3.
Actual Results:
extras/v4l_id/v4l_id.c:31:28: error: linux/videodev.h: no such file or directory
(/usr/src/linux-2.6.27-gentoo-r4/include/linux/ does contain this .h)
not sure where the install job is looking.

Expected Results:
compile

I apologize if this is a dup, but because my desktop is rendered nearly useless I think this should be fixed quickly. Maybe something is misconfiged but I dont know what...thanks!

installed udev-167-r1 and it removed the extras and up again, still think 151 should be fixed. imho...g.
Comment 2 Rafał Mużyło 2011-04-13 03:19:55 UTC
It's a matter of linux-headers, not kernel itself.

Also, as those are still in unstable, that would mean you're mixing stable and unstable, making this bug INVALID.

do you mean using udev-167 with 2.6.37-r4 or using udev-151 with 2.6.37-r4?

Not really.

1) Please post your `emerge --info' output.
1) Please attach the entire build log.
Comment 6 Rafał Mużyło 2011-04-13 18:12:17 UTC
No, I mean that if both udev and linux-headers from unstable are used, there's no problem (as the unstable udev has already been fixed in that regard).
I'm not talking about your *kernel* version, as that shouldn't really matter in this case.

Your bug looks as if you keyworded linux-headers-2.6.38 but stayed on stable udev - mixing gives you many surprises.

Comment 8 gary artim 2011-04-14 01:43:58 UTC
attached `emerge --info' output. not sure how to get the failing build log now that udev-167 is working without braking the system again. from what i've read the kernel-headers was causing a mismatch with udev. Am I save to run 2.6.37-r4 with udev-167 or is there more I should do to be aligned with the software packaging. cheers!
Comment 9 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2011-04-14 14:37:11 UTC
Summary:
- With linux-headers-2.6.38 you can use udev-164-r2 and newer.
- With older linux-headers there should be no such restriction to usage of specific udev-versions.

So it seems you try to use stable udev-151-r4 with unstable linux-headers-2.6.38.
Is there a reason it is necessary to use an old udev? As you kernel is very new I think there is nothing speaking against updating udev.
Comment 10 gary artim 2011-04-14 15:07:56 UTC
okay, thanks!

just a fyi, I just tried the new kernel from the portage tree. not sure how I allowed an unstable kernel-header to get installled. I did no portage switches to allow for 2.6.38 headers to be used/installled.

I'm ok with running unstable on the desktop, but think a check should be done to see if the unstable headers are being pulled with out being forced to be pulled, does this make sense?
Comment 11 Luke-Jr 2011-11-28 19:27:49 UTC
Please reopen this bug. It is a problem with just stable now. Not everyone has a new enough kernel for latest udev.
Comment 12 Luke-Jr 2011-12-12 18:49:27 UTC
For reference, the specific problematic combination in my case was sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.39 with sys-fs/udev-149
