I have a duel monitor system. Up to recently its been running fine, lately xorg has been off and on randomly flickering, locking up, shutting off the second display, and the kernel has had some panics. I have been using HDMI to my flatscreen for the better part of six months and s-video for almost a year prior to that with no issue. I have followed the Gentoo wiki guides for both the Inspiron 1525 and the Intel GMA. I'm not sure what triggered this recent randomness, my current kernel 2.6.36-r8 as well as 2.6.36-r5 were working just fine. Currently using xf86-video-intel-2.14.0, and reverting it to 2.13.0 lessens the the frequency of the problem but it still occurs. I am only using packages marked as stable for x64_64 (amd64)

Not sure if this is related, but if I upgrade to kernel 2.6.37-r4 all of the black on the screen is replaced with green, starting right after grub and during init.
This leads me to believe the kernel driver for i915 is busted in some way, or it's not configured correctly, although I've followed the wiki.

my bad. reverted to kernel 2.6.34-r12 and the problem hasnt surfaced all day. will check back.
still no issue. so this looks like something wrong with the i915 driver in the kernel > 2.6.34-r12
so i'm still using 2.6.34-gentoo-r12 even though it's been taken out of portage. it is the only kernel that is currently working for me. after messing around some more i think i've narrowed it down to KMS, which when enabled in newer kernels makes my second display through hdmi display green instead of black. black is green wherever black should be. disabling KMS causes X to complain. i've recently updated to baselayout 2 and tweaked other settings like backlight support and framebuffer console but only disabling/enabling KMS fixes/causes the problem. again, without KMS i cant start X. so there is something with KMS and HDMI, as the primary display (my laptop lcd) isnt affected. (my setup is the laptop with the lid closed with hdmi running to a flatscreen, i would like to keep my flatscreen capabilities!)

For the newest gentoo-sources (gentoo-sources-2.6.38-r6) I've verified that the kernel configuration and grub kernel options match http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Kernel_Mode_Setting Tried forcing a generic mode, no luck. Same with forcing interface. Disabled modesetting at grub level and got correct colors on 640x480 resolution. X wouldnt start of course. Currently back on 2.6.34-r12
Please also report this problem at bugs.freedesktop.org (if not report already exists) and add the URL to this bug. Does the second monitor still display green if you disable the first one using the video=outputname:d kernel parameter? outputname can be determined from /sys/class/drm/card0
