You can install libswscale from http://ffmpeg.org or .deb users: apt-get install libswscale-dev configure: error: Please install required packages It looks like gnash-0.8.9-ffmpeg-detection.patch is supposed to fix this, but that patch doesn't seem to do anything useful: it just sets avcodec_version_h, which is never used. I believe that variable was first added in http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnash.git/commit/?id=27a4e1f6a5b50e35af8fa29f9cd9fabf5ee777bd , which should perhaps be added to the ebuild. I added the patch to the ebuild. Please reopen if building gnash still fails.

Created attachment 269157 [details, diff] gnash-0.8.9-look-harder-for-version_h.patch This patch will make configure detect ffmpeg correctly on Gentoo. However, there still appears to be a build failure at a later point.
The configure error has been fixed, so I am closing this bug. For the linker error, I have opened bug 362949.
