Description Ivan Todorović 2011-04-08 15:36:51 UTC
A while back squeezeboxserver-7.5.2 was removed from portage. Over the years that I've used squeezeboxserver I find squeezeboxserver to be an increasingly fragile package and am therefore wary of upgrading when I have a working install. I current have 7.5.2 and I'd upgrade to 7.5.3 if there were no major concerns on the squeezebox forum, which seems to me not to be the case. See for example the below posts which lists some of the problems with 7.5.3.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85448
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86900
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86471

Even if it 7.5.3 is considered superior I would still suggest to keep at least the previous version in portage, seeing these forum post and knowing the troubles I and others have had just by upgrading.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge --sync
2. eix squeezeboxserver
3.
Actual Results:
media-sound/squeezeboxserver
     Available versions: (~)7.5.1-r1 ~7.5.3

Expected Results:
At least one preceding version of squeezeboxserver beeing in available in portage.

If my install of version 7.5.2 would break I'm not sure I'd be able to put it back together. I did quickpkg it after it disappeared from portage, but don't know if it will work. Apart from that uncertainty I don't see how it could be easily reinstalled. That's why I'm putting severity normal.

FYI, ebuilds are never gone forever. You *can* keep a local overlay if the maintainer doesn't wish to keep versions around. http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/media-sound/squeezeboxserver/?hideattic=0

Er, you forgot to assign the bug!

If retaining and older version, how do stop the squeezebox from entering the upgrade/downgrade loop? My squeezebox remote (controller) always accepts the firmware upgrade from Logitech, then figures that the server is not upgraded and then downgrades. This process seems to go no forever.

Didn't think of that. I reemerged successfully using a local overlay. Thanks!

How can I make sure I've got all the sourcefiles around in case I need to do it again?

I'm closing this bug for now. Please re-open if you find any important regressions in 7.5.3. Hopefully anything minor will be fixed in the next release.
