Description K. Posern 2011-04-07 22:59:22 UTC
I have all major python versions: eselect python list
Available Python interpreters:
  [1]   python2.6 *
  [2]   python2.7
  [3]   python3.1
  [4]   python3.2

emerge pybugz works fine, but "bugz" gets me:
Traceback (most recent call last):

    from bugz.clparser import make_parser, get_kwds
  File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/bugz/clparser.py", line 3, in <module>

ImportError: No module named argparse

Reproducible: Always

Hmmm (thinking about the title change)...
... But imho argparse was introduced in python2.7 and python3.2 to replace optparse: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0389/

And as it is looking for argparse, it should have the dependency to python2.7, no?
Comment 3 K. Posern 2011-04-08 03:45:19 UTC
Sorry... now that I put my last comment I have to add this one:

Ah ok... pybugz probably supports python2.6 and 2.7 (or 3.2)... but here the bugz-2.6 version tries to use argparse which only exists in 2.7 / 3.2...

... so you probably don't want the hardcoded dependency on any version of Python 2, which is at least 2.7.* in the package (PYTHON_DEPEND="2:2.7")

Thanks anyway for taking on this humble little bug report of mine and I will be silent now ;) :)
Comment 4 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2011-04-17 21:55:42 UTC
My guess is that you need to run python-updater.

By default, python modules are installed for your default python2 and python3 versions. If you want to install argparse for all python versions, set USE_PYTHON in make.conf. USE_PYTHON="2.6 2.7 3.1 3.2" for example.

You should run python-updater any time you change the default python implementation (eselect python) or alter the USE_PYTHON variable.
Comment 5 K. Posern 2011-04-21 13:53:18 UTC
I did run python-updater. Sorry for not mentioning this :/

Hmm... it definitely works in 2.[567] for me (see below).

I don't know why you don't have argparse installed for python-2.6. Maybe try reinstalling dev-python/argparse?

==========================================================
Just tried python-updater again:

 root@seven ~ # python-updater &>/tmp/python-updater.output
 root@seven ~ # bugz
Traceback (most recent call last):

    import argparse
ImportError: No module named argparse

If you want I can post/upload the output of python-updater.

==========================================================
So am I supposed to have argparse installed, because I don't (or you suggested argparse as a workaround?):
 root@seven ~ # eix argparse
* dev-python/argparse
     Available versions:  1.1 ~1.2.1
     Homepage:            http://code.google.com/p/argparse/ http://pypi.python.org/pypi/argparse
     Description: Provides an easy, declarative interface for creating command line tools.

==========================================================
Finally I tried again to rebuild pybugz, but no change:

 root@seven ~ # emerge -avtq pybugz
[ebuild   R   ] www-client/pybugz-0.9.0  USE="bash-completion zsh-completion"

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

    import argparse
ImportError: No module named argparse

==========================================================
I think THIS should be the problem:

 root@seven ~ # qlist python-2.6|grep -i argparse
 root@seven ~ # qlist python-2.7|grep -i argparse
/usr/lib64/python2.7/argparse.py
/usr/lib64/python2.7/test/test_argparse.py
 root@seven ~ # qlist python-3.2|grep -i argparse
/usr/lib64/python3.2/argparse.py
/usr/lib64/python3.2/test/test_argparse.py

argparse is NOT part of python2.6!
So if pybugz decides to use python2.6 then it needs a dependency to the argparse package for all python2.x that are < 2.7, no?!
Comment 8 K. Posern 2011-04-21 22:35:42 UTC
I also meant to post this:

 root@seven ~ # cat /etc/make.conf|grep -i use_python
# With no USE_PYTHON line in /etc/make.conf by default you will get files for the active version of Python 2.x and Python 3.x.
USE_PYTHON="2.6 2.7 3.2"

Oh, that is odd! You are correct; python-2.7 bundles argparse, but other versions do not.

floppym@naomi ~ % qfile $(locate argparse.py)
dev-lang/python (/usr/lib64/python2.7/test/test_argparse.py)
dev-lang/python (/usr/lib64/python2.7/argparse.py)
dev-python/argparse (/usr/lib64/python2.5/site-packages/argparse.py)
dev-python/argparse (/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/argparse.py)
dev-python/argparse (/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/argparse.py)
dev-python/argparse (/usr/lib64/python3.1/site-packages/argparse.py)

I agree, the dev-python/argparse dep should probably just be applied across all python versions since that will give the greatest compatibility.

So, change this:

|| ( dev-lang/python:2.7 dev-python/argparse )

To this:

dev-python/argparse
Comment 10 K. Posern 2011-04-22 00:16:25 UTC
But wouldn't it make more sense to change:

|| ( dev-lang/python:2.7 dev-python/argparse )

into

|| ( dev-lang/python:2.6 dev-python/argparse )

... as python-2.7 and upwards has argparse built in?

What we want for this dependency is to install the external module for any python2.* besides 2.7. Also, if you have python 3.1 on your system, it should be installed for python 3.1, even though that is not used by pybugz.

In a nutshell, the argparse module is bundled with python 2.7 and 3.2, so the external module is not needed for them, but it is needed for older 2.* and 3.1.

I don't think there is a way to express this exact dependency.

The next best option is to depend on dev-python/argparse unconditionally, which means that there will be two copies of argparse.py installed for python 2.7 and 3.2.

This duplication could be worked around by setting RESTRICT_PYTHON_ABIS="2.7 3.2" in the dev-python/argparse ebuild.
Comment 14 William Hubbs gentoo-dev 2011-04-22 21:37:01 UTC
Here is my setup:

Available Python interpreters:
  [1]   python2.6 *
  [2]   python2.7
  [3]   python3.1

I just unmerged and remerged argparse and pybugz, and here is what I
have.

/usr
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/python2.6
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/argparse-1.1-py2.6.egg-info
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/argparse.py
/usr/lib/python3.1
/usr/lib/python3.1/site-packages
/usr/lib/python3.1/site-packages/argparse-1.1-py3.1.egg-info
/usr/lib/python3.1/site-packages/argparse.py
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/argparse-1.1
/usr/share/doc/argparse-1.1/README.txt.bz2

As you can see, argparse is installed for python 2.6 and 3.1, which is
correct.

/usr
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/bugz
/usr/bin/bugz-2.6
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/python2.6
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/bugz
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/bugz/__init__.py
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/bugz/bugzilla.py
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/bugz/cli.py
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/bugz/clparser.py
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/bugz/config.py
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/pybugz-0.9.0-py2.6.egg-info
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/pybugz-0.9.0
/usr/share/doc/pybugz-0.9.0/README.bz2
/usr/share/man
/usr/share/man/man1
/usr/share/man/man1/bugz.1.bz2

Also, pybugz is installed for python-2.6, which looks right to me, since
python-2.6 is my active python interpretor.

From what I know I would think the above is probably the easiest.
But in all cases the ebuild should need to be changed.
Because the line:
> || ( dev-lang/python:2.7 dev-python/argparse )
Does NOT pull in argparse if you have python2.7 AND python2.6 installed.
And if python 2.6 is your default, then you should have my problem.
As no argparse gets installed (even though needed).

And the slight negative side effect: That argparse might get pulled in even if not needed (e.g. for people with python 2.7 or python3.2 as default) should be fine, no?

(see also Comment #13)

William Hubbs - you are probably the maintainer (as this ticket is assigned to you): Do you agree with this fix?
Comment 16 William Hubbs gentoo-dev 2011-04-24 15:19:15 UTC
All,

since python-2.7 is now stable, would there be any objections to me requiring that version for pybugz? That would get around the argparse issue.

Thanks,

So that would mean this:

PYTHON_DEPEND="2:2.7"
RESTRICT_PYTHON_ABIS="2.[456] 3.*"

My preference would be to have the dev-python/argparse dep, but the above works for me as well.

I can't change the dependency to dev-python/argparse without the
stabilization request I have added to this bug.

If pybugz works with python-2.7 I think requiring it is a clean solution and a good step at this point (with python 2.7 being the last release of python-2 and other programs doing the same thing (e.g. calibre)). ... but thats just me (probably biased by the fact of being a happy user of python-3 at work).

This will be fixed in 0.9.2, which will require python-2.7.
