(or not?) ...to get more than blank squares instead of letters rendered on the globe. This was bugging me for a long time already (several major googleearth and xorg-server versions), but it isn't exactly a life important package here.

After oldschooly adding the FontPath to xorg.conf it finally worked.

Please don't CC random developers even if they appear at the top of the ChangeLog. Use metadata.xml to find out who maintains a package.
Comment 2 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-04-04 11:32:33 UTC
I haven't seen your problem with googleearth at all while likewise I do not have media-fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera installed. So I guess your fontconfig setup is flawed. Try running `eselect fontconfig list' and then set it to some reasonable defaults.
Comment 3 Andreas Sturmlechner gentoo-dev 2011-04-04 12:36:53 UTC
Sorry, I picked the CC from inside the ebuild.

I already took a glance at 'eselect fontconfig list' yesterday and couldn't find anything obviously wrong, frankly I never changed anything in there, but I can post it here later today when I'm back at the machine.

I have the same problems here with google earth 6 and nothing I have tried so far works.

My eselect fontconfig list:

  [21] 57-dejavu-sans.conf
  [22] 57-dejavu-sans-mono.conf
  [23] 57-dejavu-serif.conf
  [24] 60-latin.conf *
  [25] 60-liberation.conf

I never changed anything at it.
Comment 6 redneb 2011-12-09 04:16:31 UTC
I have the same problem with 5.2 and 6.0. OTOH, 5.1 seems to work fine. One thing I've noticed is that when I go to

tools -> options -> 3d view -> choose 3d font

I don't see any fonts being listed there (in >=5.2) or I see all installed fonts (in 5.1). Can someone who doesn't have this problem with >=5.2 check what fonts appear in that dialog?
Comment 7 Jean-Claude Repetto 2012-03-19 16:48:11 UTC
I had the same problem, and I solved it by installing media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi .
See : http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-916506.html

The ebuild should be changed to ask for this package.

New ebuild for GoogleEarth

Install missing fonts
Comment 9 redneb 2012-03-19 20:33:18 UTC
I don't think that this is a proper solution for 2 reasons:

1) These fonts are bitmap fonts and look really ugly
2) They don't support non-Latin characters.

As I mentioned in Comment 6, the problem seems to be that google earth can only see the bitmap fonts installed in the system.
Comment 10 Jean-Claude Repetto 2012-03-20 08:49:44 UTC
May be it is not a perfect solution, but in the meantime I can use GoogleEarth.
Comment 11 Julian Ospald 2013-02-10 15:32:07 UTC
is this still an issue with 7.0.2.8415-r1?
Comment 12 Andreas Sturmlechner gentoo-dev 2013-02-10 15:34:59 UTC
That version doesn't even start here, so I couldn't test. ;)
