xmess lauched from a gui will remain in memory, launching xmess again will start a new xmess the old one remains in memory. If launched from a terminal xmess does not release control of the terminal, requiring ctrl-c Does this have anything to do with settings?
forgot something.... Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.10 Portage 2.0.49-r15 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r3, 2.4.20-gaming-r3) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.20-gaming-r3 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="sandbox ccache autoaddcvs" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo ftp://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j1" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 oss avi crypt gtk2 jpeg mad mpeg ncurses nls png quicktime truetype xml2 xmms xv zlib slang readline java X sdl gpm tcpd pam ssl perl python imlib qt opengl dv dvd joystick lirc memlimit mmx mysql pic tiff unicode usb v4l wmf wxwin wxwindows xosd xvid -apm -arts -cups -encode -foomaticdb -gif -kde -gnome -libg++ -libwww -mikmod -motif -oggvorbis -pdflib -spell -gdbm -berkdb -svga -esd -gtk" I will do a test and remove the -fomit-frame-pointer, didn't notice that until now.
compiling without fomit-frame-pointer does not fix the problem
what gui were you using ?
first it was being launched from Konqueror, when closed the xmess process would remain in memory bring the system to a crawl now I have it launching via a script so when the Konsole window is closed so is xmess. I had the same problem using twm. xmame is being launched via gxmame. If I remember right there is a way to "watch" and trap xmess so it will display where it is hanging? Just point me to the directions.
could you try out 0.79.1 and see if this bug still exists ?
Try 0.81.1 and report here if this is still a problem please.
In short, duplicating the scenario on this secondary computer would be difficult so technically this bug is now invalid, so I am closing it. Thank you for your patience.
