Bug 357939 is the only reason why cairo-1.8.x is still in Portage, otherwise it would have been removed already. What's the problem? I don't see a bug here.
Dep has been reduced, ppc will need to resolve cairo issues rather soon.
Samuli, I already pointed to the bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358325 With Cairo 1.10, firefox won't even load up on ppc. Until that is fixed, cairo 1.10 can not go stable on ppc.
Bug is been fixed in mozconfig-3.eclass.
