Current stable sys-devel/crossdev-20101011 in combination with an otherwise current stable system is unable to build an i686-pc-linux-gnu toolchain on amd64.

See bug #358639.

This especially bites all people who want to use their powerful amd64s as distcc helpers for their less powerful i686s.

If the changes in crossdev-20110310 appear too radical for speedy stabilization, perhaps the workaround detailed (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358639#c8) could be integrated into a (stable) crossdev-20101011-r1 package.

done now
