Description Sven Schwyn (svoop) 2011-03-21 09:14:15 UTC
I've updated to portage-2.1.9.44 today. The emerge failed after unmerging the old Portage (full output see below):

>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
>>> Original instance of package unmerged safely.
 * Compilation and optimization of Python modules placed outside of site-packages directories for CPython 2.6 ...
python2.6: can't open file '/usr//python2.6/compileall.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory

I can still emerge packages, however, some gentoolkit tools such as equery don't work anymore:

# equery
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/equery", line 25, in <module>
    import gentoolkit
  File "/usr/lib/gentoolkit/pym/gentoolkit/__init__.py", line 26, in <module>
    import portage
ImportError: No module named portage

I leave this box in this inconsistent state for further analysis. However, I have a second one on which the update has not been done yet. So I guess I could quickpkg the old Portage there and restore the broken box once this bug is nailed.

Reproducible: Always

try to set USE="pathon2" or python 3
Comment 3 Sven Schwyn (svoop) 2011-03-21 11:56:14 UTC
The above error during emerge happens with USE="python2" but not with USE="python3".

(However, equery from gentoolkit does not work wither way. May be unrelated though.)

Note that the "lib" directory is missing from that path. Seems similar to bug 359731. I guess I need to make the ebuild die if something goes wrong with the multilib eclass. You might have to recover portage manually:

Comment 5 Sven Schwyn (svoop) 2011-03-21 12:54:23 UTC
Thanks for the link, I've fixed my box as outlined and then updated Portage (without any pythonX USE flags) successfully.
Comment 6 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2011-03-21 12:58:27 UTC
I've added to following code to pkg_setup for all the sys-apps/portage ebuilds:

	[[ -z $(get_libdir) ]] && \
		die "get_libdir returned an empty string"

Hopefully the multilib eclass or profile issue has been corrected already. Anyway, now it will die before it can do any damage.

Apparently, at least I could update portage on a twin box without any problems after "emerge --sync" first.

Better safe than sorry ;-)
