I am not sure if it is not needed in some installs, but me and at least one other person both had to perform it so our machines could identify themselves.

There is an entry for dnsdomainname, but none for rc-update add hostname default

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Read docs
2. Its not there
3.
Actual Results:  
The new machine can't get its own hostname 

Expected Results:  
rc-update add hostname default 

Like I said, maybe my machine is misconfigured somewhere else and I really should 
not need it, but I do...

Bill, can you check if hostname is in the boot runlevel? It is on my PCs and I don't remember I did it manually.

The "hostname" init script is automatically added to the boot runlevel. It is listed in the rc-lists/boot file which is contained in the rc-scripts tarball of the baselayout package and installed by the baselayout ebuild.
