Description Michael-Reilly 2003-12-15 17:47:38 UTC
I have been trying to move from slackware to gentoo on my laptops. I began with gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r5. After a few hours my laptop hung. Same thing happens with -r7, -r8 and -r9.

I have a couple of machines an IBM ThinkPad 600x and a ThinkPad A31p. I use the 16 bit Xircom PCMCIA ethernet card. Without the network card both machines run without problems. If I have the network card installed the machines hang after about 5 hours regardles of the amount of network activity. I tried emerging a large number of packages while working on one machine - 5 hours and it was hung. I tried booting the machine, bringing up X and then doing nothing. Same thing - 5 hours and it was hung.

Just before the machine hung emerge reported it was unable to download a package. I.e., the network card was no longer working although the activity light was blinking due to traffic on the LAN.

When the machine hangs there is no response to any key and the mouse cursor cannot be made to move using the mouse. I think there was output activity in one of the xterm windows for awhile after the keyboard and mouse hung but am not sure.

Pulling the Xircom card out of the PCMCIA slot has no effect - no beep from card services and the machine remains hung.

After power cycling the machine and rebooing I examined all of the logs. Nothing abnormal was logged.

The same thing happens when using pcmcia-cs and when using the kernel built in PCMCIA support. I have tried the built in support as a module and compiled into the kernal. Nothing has solved this problem so far.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot the machine
2.Insert Xircom PCMCIA card if not already inserted.
3.Wait 5 hours

Actual Results:
No response to keyboard or mouse. Removing the Xircom card from the PCMCIA slot
has no effect - no card manage "beeps".

Expected Results:
Continue to funcition

Emerge info to be added (I do not have the gentoo machine with me at the moment).

When you get a chance can you try gentoo-sources-2.4.22, and let us know if the problem is fixed.

seems to be fixed
