Description Tom Noonan 2011-03-08 04:03:09 UTC
Modules Pager and MonitorWharf from =x11-wm/afterstep-2.2.9 will no longer start automatically when Afterstep is started. When started by Afterstep they attempt to use $DISPLAY * 10 and fail:

Pager ERROR: Can't open display ":30". Exiting!

I have hit this on both x86 and ia64. It is independent of Afterstep's config files. I can still fork a terminal, and if I call these modules by hand they work.

Reproducible: Always

I rooted a bit in the source, and I'm very suspicious of this line:

char *display = mystrdup(XDisplayString (dpy));
(asapp.c, line 1124)

and I'm wondering if the New and Improved X that was released in the last month or so has broken this call in some way. Since all 3 boxes of mine broke at the same time I very suspicious that this is the result of a dependency upgrade. I haven't debugged the output of that call yet, though. I may be barking up the wrong tree with that line of code. I'll try and triage that function and report back.

Also, the x86 box is running xorg-server-1.9.4
The ia64 box is back at xorg-server-1.9.2

Let me know what other dependency versions would be usefull.
Comment 3 Tom Noonan 2011-03-12 22:43:54 UTC
Afterstep 2.2.11 does this, too.
Comment 4 Tom Noonan 2011-03-13 00:24:02 UTC
spwan_child() is being called with int screen = 0. This is causing the sprintf on line 1279 of asapp.c (2.2.11) to add a 0 to the DISPLAY argument.
Comment 5 Tom Noonan 2011-03-13 20:22:52 UTC
VNC seems to be a factor.

This step wasn't the best debugging procedure, but I think it is valid. Since all my existing servers are racked and headless, I updated and installed afterstep-2.2.9 on my VNC client box. Afterstep started as expected. Since this bug is happening on all my other boxes, I assume that the root problem is common enough that it would exist here, too.
Comment 6 Tom Noonan 2011-03-13 22:35:43 UTC
I've created a hackaround ebuild documented here:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-867977.html

I'm not currently going to triage this any further for reasons documented in the forum posting.
Comment 7 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-10-19 14:58:20 UTC
Still valid with 2.2.11-r1?
Comment 8 Tom Noonan 2013-11-09 03:43:05 UTC
It appears so:
Pager ERROR: Can't open display ":10". Exiting!
MonitorWharf ERROR: Can't open display ":10". Exiting!

Comment 9 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-07-07 15:23:41 UTC
Can you please report this to upstream? Otherwise I doubt it will be ever fixed

Thanks
