Description Thomas Kohler 2011-03-07 20:36:20 UTC
I have upgraded my system with emerge -NDu world. Now cups don't print anymore (also no test page) to my brother mfc465cn. After send the page only the display light up but nothing else.

First I'm presuming the reason is my old mfc440cn driver (released 2007). But after an upgrade to the newest drivers (mfc465cncupswrapper-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm, mfc465cnlpr-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm) the same problem exist.

After switch on the "Save debugging information for troubleshooting" switch at administration site of cups server "less /var/log/cups/error_log" show me a small entry like "a2ps not found".

After emerge a2ps everything works fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. update cups to 1.3.11-r4 (or another application which formerly include a2ps)
2. print test page
Actual Results:
no page is print

Expected Results:
page should be printed

a2ps should be installed with cups

It's the Brother filter driver (see file filtermfc465cn from mfc465cnlpr-1.0.1-1.i386.rpm) which needs a2ps, not CUPS itself. If you install something manually you also have to manually take care of possible dependencies.
