Description philip-may 2003-12-13 12:49:43 UTC
The Installation guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1&chap=7
sais to copy System.map after kernel compile this way:
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.22
But when you install Gentoo like its said in the installationdoc /boot is not
mounted during runtime. But klogd need to be able to see System.map
(see: http://64.142.25.39/linux/system.map/ )
This somehow makes no sense for me since other programs need System.map too.

Solution: I dont know ... maybe copy System.map to "/" ?

Actually if the System.map resides as /usr/src/linux/System.map, then it is okay too. The tools needing System.map search for System.map on a couple of locations and that is one of them. This is also why you shouldn't "mv" the file, but "cp".

The reason why copying it to /boot is still preferable is to have a "backup" copy. You don't have to copy it though, but I've added it to the instructions nevertheless 'cause it doesn't hurt :)

I'll mark this as WORKSFORME (klogd works :)
