If both media-libs/musicbrainz-2.1.5 and media-libs/musicbrainz-3.0.2 are installed, then when media-sound/rhythmbox-0.12.8-r1 is installed with use flag +musicbrainz, rhythmbox links to libmusicbrainz.so from musicbrainz-2.1.5 instead of libmusicbrainz3.so from musicbrainz-3.0.2. This leads to emerge --depclean always reporting that musicbrainz-2.1.5 was not removed to avoid breaking link-level dependencies. This can't be solved with just revdep-rebuild and emerge --depclean, but instead you need to manually emerge -C =media-libs/musicbrainz-2.1.5 and re-emerge rhythmbox. This happened to me naturally through upgrades, so while the old version of musicbrainz is still in the tree it's possible other people will hit it too. This also affects rhythmbox-0.13.
I would report this to upstream (I think I saw a similar behavior some time ago, maybe in sound-juicer :-/)
The sound-juicer bug was bug 275798. It seems musicbrainz 2/3 offer different support and some programs knowingly use both. That said, it may or may not be the case for rhythmbox, and either way the ebuild needs to reflect it better and use SLOT deps (against one or both or USE flag controlled selection).
As told by upstream: "This was intentional. I recently removed the libmusicbrainz2 code as it doesn't work any more, though."
