Hum,

If I may interrupt. I just upgraded my PPC machine to TeXlive-2010, and seem to have a similar problem. I've been trying to compile three document which, so far, worked alright, and I get the same “! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [PDF object stream buffer=n]” messages.

As suggested somewehere, I've tried to run “texmf-update”, to no avail.

Note that I'm not using Gnuplot at all, but I am definitely \input'ing PDF files (note the “PDF object stream buffer” precision in the error message).

The output of emerge --info is below, and I'll attach a pdflatex log in a moment.

Output log of pdflatex on a document using graphicx to include a PDF image.

Rectification to what I just said: I'm using graphicx and \includegraphics to include the PDF figures. Commenting these out seems to remove the problem.
Comment 5 Alexis Ballier gentoo-dev 2011-04-12 14:41:28 UTC
did you update the files in /etc before running texmf-update ?

if yes, please attach the files needed to reproduce the bug

you can increase the "tex memory" in the '/etc/texmf/texmf.d/20sizes.cnf' file with, among others, the main_memory variable
Comment 6 Olivier Mehani 2011-04-13 13:21:21 UTC
I didn't change the size values in /etc. I just did, rerun texmf-update, and tried a very simple example (source and log attached). In short, changing the main_memory from 3000000 to 10000000 doesn't change anything, even mith the simplest document. I'm not entirely surprise as, as I pointed out, the LaTeX error seems to specifically mention the “PDF object stream.” However, I couldn't find anything that looked related to that in 20sizes.cnf.

Could it be a graphicx problem?

Log from compiling the testcase; ends with “! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [PDF object stream buffer=260].”, even with main_memory texmf-updated to 10000000
Comment 10 Olivier Mehani 2011-05-19 12:44:02 UTC
I just upgraded to dev-texlive/texlive-latexextra-2010-r2, which provides graphicx. The problem is still there. Can I do anything to further investigate it?
Comment 11 Alexis Ballier gentoo-dev 2011-05-19 17:38:26 UTC
actually this seems to be a pdftex problem on ppc, will investigate more later:
http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.context/month=20080201/page=39
Comment 12 Alexis Ballier gentoo-dev 2011-05-27 18:32:09 UTC
maybe the lfs issue striking again...

could you please try to emerge dev-tex/pdftex-1.40.11, eselect it via 'eselect pdftex set 1', you should have a symlink like that then:
/usr/bin/pdftex -> pdftex-pdftex-1.40.11

and then try again if it fails ?
Comment 13 Olivier Mehani 2011-05-30 10:50:05 UTC
Hum, it seems to be worse... I get a segfault as follows (blah.tex is the testcase attached earlier).

hmm could you give me a backtrace ? see http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml

you may need to recompile dev-libs/kpathsea and dev-tex/pdftex with debugging symbols
Comment 15 Olivier Mehani 2011-06-02 12:24:59 UTC
There it goes. I ended up rebuilding pdtfex and kpathsea (FEATURES="nostrip splitdebug" CFLAGS="-O2 -ggdb"), as you mentioned, However, I fiddled a bit trying to get it so I'm not sure if kpathsea was indeed needed. It appears it was.

please try with app-text/texlive-core-2010-r2: i've disabled largefile support there so it should be fine now, please reopen if i'm wrong :=) (as i have no way to test this :( )
Comment 17 Olivier Mehani 2011-06-30 10:06:09 UTC
Yep! It works fine with app-text/texlive-core-2010-r2.

I suspect this fix is only temporary though, as I understand, this seems to be an upstream bug?

great

well, yes and no: largefile has had caused problem for 32bits big endian arches, i thought it had been fixed but it seems not, I'll leave it off for now on I think: who needs to produce >4GB pdf files?
