Then it just stopped calculating anything else, this shouldn't happen. This should not be the behavior (with the --keep-going switch?); instead it should continue calculating other orphan installed packages and remove what it can without breaking dependencies. The problem is that if some dependecy cannot be resolved, the depgraph is broken. This leaves the possibility for some packages to be missing from the calculated depgraph, which otherwise would be included. It would be very hard to output a "correct" solution (what ever that is in this case) and the risk to remove a needed package is way to high. We need depclean to be a safe operation. In short: No, the current behavior is the only sane one.
It may be possible to create an approximate solution by completing the dependency graph using unbuilt ebuilds, but this approach may be error-prone and difficult to maintain.
