Description Bogdan 2011-02-22 12:55:30 UTC
i am trying to install gento into a virtual machine running under windows 7 on my work computer. i switched to console 2 (alt-f2), created a new user, logged in with su - user, tested the network connection (ping www.gentoo.org - worked corectly), set the http proxy via "export http_proxy="..." on console 1 (under root account) and on console 2 under current user, and tried to launch "links http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml".
links started, showed "making connection" in the status area, and nothing happened. after 10 minutes it timed out with an error message. after that i tried starting links with the -http-proxy switch, but when i did that, it directly showed an error (host not found) instead of attempting a connection. i tried to start it without the switch several more times, but everytime the connection times out. i really want to be able to see the handbook in links, because i'm planning on installing gentoo on my home desktop and i need access to the handbook. Note that if i enter the same URL in the browser on the host operating system, it connects instantly and the handbook appears.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot the x86 install cd
2. switch to console 2 (alt-f2)
3. create a new user and log in with it
4. test the network connectivity with ping - returns success
5. access the handbook via links
6. connection timeout

Actual Results:
after 10 minutes waiting, links reported the connection timed out.

Expected Results:
links should have connected succesfuly and display the handbook

i was trying to install in a virtual machine under Oracle VirtualBox

This probably means you can't resolve names in your guest. Make sure your /etc/resolv.conf configuration is correct and that you can ping and resolve names through your name servers.
