Description Nils Holland 2011-02-19 03:03:37 UTC
I'd like to propose a new mirror for inclusion in the official mirror list and rsync rotation. Here are the hard facts, some background information can be found under "Additional Information" below.

The mirror provides the following, all via IPv4 and IPv6:

Gentoo distfiles (incl. releases and all, i.e. "full source mirror") at
ftp://rush.tisys.org/pub/gentoo
http://rush.tisys.org/pub/gentoo
rsync://rush.tisys.org::gentoo-distfiles

The Gentoo portage tree at
rsync://rush.tisys.org::gentoo-portage

Reproducible: Always

The server is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ with 8 GB RAM and 1,5 TB disk space, running Gentoo Linux (of course!). It is located in data center 14 of German data center operator and hosting provider Hetzner Online AG in Falkenstein, Saxony, Germany, which is a highly modern data center that was put into service only in December 2010. Hetzner has won several awards for their quality of service and performance. In total, they have a combined upstream bandwidth of almost 200 GBit/s, in particular, what sets them apart from many other German data center operators is that they have a dedicated 20 GBit/s connection to Deutsche Telekom, Germany's largest end-customer ISP (both for private and business customers). Other upstream connectivity currently in service at Hetzner:

40 GBit/s DE-CIX
30 GBit/s Noris Network
20 GBit/s Tiscali
10 GBit/s LambdaNet
10 GBit/s Global Crossing
10 GBit/s Aixit
10 GBit/s TeliaSonera
10 GBit/s Level3
10 GBit/s Init7
10 GBit/s KPN
10 GBit/s N-IX
10 GBit/s AMS-IX

In addition to IPv4, they also provide IPv6, which is becoming increasingly important, and thus the mirror server is also accessible via IPv6.

I have set up the server explicitly as a Gentoo mirror server, i.e. it does not do anything else currently. I might in the future add other mirroring activities or some of my own stuff, but only in such a way that it does not negatively impact the server's main task, which would be providing public Gentoo mirror service.

Currently, the server itself is set to sync once every four hours via rsync with ftp.ussg.iu.edu::gentoo-distfiles, as well as rsync.de.gentoo.org (for the portage tree). I'll gladly make any changes required here, i.e. sync from different sources and / or at different times / intervals, just let me know what would be appropriate here.

Greetings,
Nils

Addendum:

- This mirror does not mirror its portage tree from rsync.de.gentoo.org as said in my original text, but of course also from ftp.ussg.iu.edu.

- Since announcing it here, on the German Gentoo users list and the public wiki of Hetzner Online (the datacenter operator where the mirror is located), it has seen more and more users each day and currently seems to work real fine.

Thanks, it isn't that we are ignoring you here but we have quite a few community mirrors already in Germany. The need is not that high at the moment. Thanks for understanding.

Hello. On behalf of the mirror-admin team, I want to apologize for not getting back to your bug report. At this time, we are closing ALL new mirror request bugs.

The Gentoo Linux Infrastructure team and the mirror-admin team have found that a plethora of community mirrors exist and adding more requires an exponential amount time from us then we have available. As such, this becomes a more poor user experience than desired because the team cannot keep up. The Gentoo Linux project is not contrained in hardware resources and does not need anymore mirrors (even if your request is for a country that is not represented currently).

Thanks for understanding and thank you for your interest.
With regards,
Jeremy
