Description Jan Hrabe 2011-02-18 18:56:20 UTC
I have removed the hal USE flag from make.conf and uninstalled hal from the system. After "emerge -uDN world" and "revdep-rebuild", everything works fine except the k3b, which cannot find any CD/DVD writer. From the messages it produces, it seems it still wants hal:

-----------

:~> k3b
K3bQProcess::QProcess(0x0)
QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(const Solid::DeviceInterface::Type&)  error:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

K3bQProcess::QProcess(0x0)

k3b(4963)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_dir_tree" with KXMLGUIFactory!

k3b(4963)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_contents" with KXMLGUIFactory!

k3b(4963)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "location_bar" with KXMLGUIFactory!

QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(const Solid::DeviceInterface::Type&)  error:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

----------

I tried to explicitly put "-hal" for k3b into packages.use and recompile it but it makes no difference. This is my emerge --info:

You might need KDE 4.6 for that. Which KDE version do you have?

Version xfce4 :-) . I only use k3b and kstars from KDE. The kdelibs and kdebase-runtime-meta both indicate version 4.4.5, which I believe is the current stable one. But the messages printed out when the k3b ebuild was installed urged me to avoid hal.

Those forum topics seem to be related:

Afair, k3b with kdelibs+solid <= 4.5 still needs hal. Since you don't use KDE, you could probably keyword the KDE libraries and use 4.6.

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried keywording the kdelibs but that seems to require some conflicting dependencies. My solution was to give up on k3b and install the bashburn instead, which works just fine.

I would like to suggest that the ebuild for k3b should require hal to be installed.

Since it works without HAL when using the KDE libraries (solid) from 4.6, depending on HAL is counterproductive. I can't speak for the Gentoo KDE team, but this bug will probably remain open until KDE 4.6 gets stabilized.

Your observation is 100% correct. In your case kdelibs-4.4 requires hal (and not k3b). Insofar, that's not really a bug, more a missing feature of kdelibs-4.4.
