Description Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-02-14 07:46:58 UTC
I'm using xfce-4.8 on a stable x86 system inside VMWare Fusion. Previously I was using xfce-4.6 and the problem was not present. When logging out, the "restart" and "shutdown" buttons are always greyed out.

Initially I had system compiled with support for ConsoleKit, so I made sure ConsoleKit daemon was started and edited /etc/X11/Sessions/Xfce4 to have "ck-launch-session startxfce4" instead of just "startxfce4" (I'm not using .xinitrc; my login manager is x11-misc/slim).

After that I tried disabling ConsoleKit support, and after applying the changes via emerge -uDNa world, dispatch-conf, and reboot, the restart and shutdown buttons in logout dialog are still grayed out for me.

I'm sorry if it's a configuration issue on my side, I just couldn't find documentation how to configure it properly. I'd like to continue using /etc/X11/Sessions/Xfce4 file instead of .xinitrc.

I'm interested to know if you are in the sudoers file.

No, and that system doesn't have sudo installed, and also /etc/sudoers doesn't exist.

Would you humor me and try to install sudo and configure your user to have ALL sudo access, then re-login to xfce? There is a small 'debate' about this bit, pending your results we will add somehting to the xfce guide.

Paweł, please see first post of this thread to cut down any configuration issues you might have in your end:

If you still think this is a bug after this, please just find me at Freenode and we can debug it a lot faster there since I'll be needing outputs of various things based on output of previous things ;-)

I've installed sudo and gave my user account ALL access. I didn't even have to re-login, the logout buttons were working perfectly (problem disappeared). When I clicked "restart" it asked me for my password and then rebooted as expected.

Now I'm going to test Samuli's forums guide. Ideally I'd like to get it to work without sudo.

Thanks, that also works for me. One thing to note is that when ConsoleKit support is enabled, XFCE will no longer use sudo for restart, even if it's possible.

Is it possible to make this documentation more official? I'd expect some news item and an official documentation. I'd be glad to help with any of those, please ping me by mail or we can discuss it on a mailing list for example.

9) documentation status

"There has been a major improvement in the guide, added some 4.6 specific
tips and troubleshooting parts, we need to add a hal->udev migration
guide, and migrate some texts that are in kde overlay to guidexml."

"[21:22:35] <tampakrap> 1) status regarding hal
[21:22:55] <tampakrap> it is dead, not needed in 4.6, i'm going to convert samuli's forum post to guidexml
[21:22:59] <tampakrap> anything else to say here?"

Please talk to Tampakrap for helping him out. KDE is in the same situation as Xfce is.

Once someone has done the initial conversion from that forum post to guidexml, I'll gladly help with cleaning it out.
The biggest problem for me is getting started with it, I'm not familiar with writing xml docs.
