After upgrading from 2.4.20-gentoo-r2 to vanilla-sources-2.4.23, XFree no longer
works.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get a machine with an i830M card (IBM Thinkpad X30, many other laptops)
2. Emerge vanilla-sources-2.4.23 and xfree-4.3.0-r3
3. Boot, start X

Actual Results:  
Server starts normally, cursor freezes. Cursor movement is then very jerky (only
moves every second) for about five seconds, then X terminates with:

The problem persists whether or not the DRI drivers are loaded (tried with
kernel-provided DRI drivers, those in xfree-drm-4.3.0-r6 and none at all [yes, I
renamed deleted the i830.o so it didn't get autoloaded]).

This appears to work wonderfully on the gentoo-sources-2.4.20-rX series.

Is this xfree-r2 or -r3? You have one in the summary, another in the description. May be a kernel problem, since it's dependent on changing kernels.

Also try out xfree-drm-r7 quickly, I just added it last night.

Is this still an issue with xorg-x11 6.8, x11-drm-20040827 and a recent kernel?
