Description Tiago Marques 2011-01-26 15:42:08 UTC
I managed to work around this problem because, thankfully, a slightly older version of portage is available. Otherwise I couldn't install anything. This is in a stock 64bit image from 2008 in a Linode server. Is it a stretch to consider this a bug, since it's an old image? I personally think this kind of breakage should never occur but I would like to know your stance on problems like this, which have become increasingly common across all my Gentoo installs for the last two years or so.

I'm considering this a blocker, please change to the appropriate severity, if it is not so.

Please see the logs below.

Not really a bug.

If you didn't update for over a year, you should expect trouble.
Comment 3 Tiago Marques 2011-01-26 16:27:02 UTC
Ok but this is a complete breakage. This is not "trouble" this is a complete inability to install anything but the right package, portage offers no help in this and I was able to fix it because I've been a user for the last 6 or 7 years, it is quite clear other persons wouldn't know what to do. In that time span, I have never seen breakage this bad.

Can't anything be done to smooth out this kind of problems, aside from updating every month. I, personally, like to deploy only security fixes once the system is stable and I would expect that most people would want to do the same, especially in servers.

Best regards

Unfortunately, things like bug 330937 arise occasionally, breaking compatibility in ways that make upgrades tricky. We continually improve sys-apps/portage so that it's better at resolving these issues automatically, but you can only benefit from theses improvements when you update sys-apps/portage regularly. So, in addition to "security fixes", it's important for you to update sys-apps/portage as often as possible.
Comment 5 Tiago Marques 2011-01-31 00:17:51 UTC
Thank you for your feedback.
I actually update portage always I can, since every sync that brings a new stable ebuild mentions this in the command line and portage is obviously independent of the rest of the system. Guess this "bug" should be closed then?

Best regards,
Tiago
