In Chapter "6.a. Chrooting" in the Installation Manuel (Updated December 7, 2003) you should tell the user how he can bring up an adsl connection after he chrooted. Solution: Add something like this: With Alt + F2 you can switch to an other console and start the adsl connection with "adsl-start". After that you have to switch back to your installation console with "Alt + F1".
I don't see why this needs to be done after the chroot. Isn't the part on "Configuring your Network" sufficient? More precisely: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1&chap=3#doc_chap3_sect3
> I don't see why this needs to be done after the chroot. Isn't the part on > "Configuring your Network" sufficient? I dont think that it is sufficient for a new Linux user. When a new Linux user chroots and doesnt have adsl up he fell through a trapdoor where he wont be able to escape caue he cant bring up an internet connection without the knowledge (and idear) to just switch the console. Also he might want to turn off adsl while compilation runs.
We shouldn't mention every error the user can make in the installation instructions (we don't want to give the user any ideas :). The instructions should be correct (duh) and that is already hard enough with a distribution that evolves as quickly as Gentoo. Regarding the terminal-switching, this has been brought to the user's attention at the beginning (right after booting the LiveCD).
