Description Dan Fuhry 2011-01-24 04:57:21 UTC
If I specify ip=dhcp or some static configuration (i.e. ip=10.1.0.2::10.1.0.1:255.255.0.0:somehost:eth0:off) on the kernel command line, and later run /etc/init.d/net.lo start, strangeness ensues with everything IPv6 related. If I run ifconfig eth0 inet6 add <valid ipv6 address and mask>, I get "SIOCSIFADDR: Invalid argument". I haven't been able to figure out exactly at what point in net.lo this problem is created, but poking around I have found no solution to the issue other than to reboot the machine.

A haxxy workaround might be to just check if lo is already configured. When ip= is specified, the kernel configures lo itself, including routes, etc.

Configuring everything IPv4 related works fine. I can bring the interface up and down, assign addresses, etc. - no problems. ifconfig, iproute2, etc. all give similar "invalid argument" results.

I'd report a specific package, but I'm new to Gentoo, so the classification is a best guess.

I've seen this happen on amd64. Have not tested at all on i386.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
0. Have a known working IPv6 network, preferably with router advertisements. Make sure you can ping6 ipv6.google.com from a known good box.
1. Install Gentoo
2. Boot with ip=dhcp
3. ping6 ipv6.google.com

Actual Results:
No reply from server.
If either the system is booted without ip=dhcp, or the net.lo init script is disabled, the server replies.

Expected Results:
Working IPv6 functionality

if this works with openrc, then i dont plan on investigating/fixing for baselayout-1 ...
Comment 2 William Hubbs gentoo-dev 2011-01-25 15:26:04 UTC
Please upgrade your system to openrc/baselayout-2 and feel free to re-open if this is still an issue.
