Description Karl Trygve Kalleberg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-12-06 11:16:24 UTC
I have a stock standard IBM ThinkPad X30:
Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU - M 1200MHz
i830M integrated video/audio card
SMC2632W PCMCIA wireless nework card.

Running gento-sources-2.4.20-r2 all the hardware works perfectly, but with any
one of the more recent kernels, some of the hardware invariably acts strangely.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
For the WLAN card:
1. Upgrade kernel to any of gentoo-sources-2.4.20-rX, X in {5,6,7,8}
2. Remerge pcmcia-cs-3.2.4 for the new kernel
3. Load the orinoco_cs driver (it will be loaded automatically on card
insertion/pcmcia startup)

All of a sudden, the _exact same version_ of pcmcia-cs as I used with the -r2
kernel fails to detect the WLAN card(!). I have tried all the -rX, X in
{5,6,7,8} revisions, and also the build-in driver. I have upgraded the orinococ
patch for pcmcia-cs to 0.13e (the latest as of last week), and still no go.

However, if I upgrade the kernel to gentoo-sources 2.4.22-r1, the WLAN works
perfectly again.

For the video card:
1. Emerge gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r1 or aa-sources-2.4.22-r1
2. Either use kernel-provided DRI drivers for the i830, those in
xfree-drm-4.3.0-r6 or none at all (no DRI support).
3. Start xfree 4.3.0-r3

A high-pitched noise is emitted from the the video card circuitry approx two
seconds after X has started and it's constantly present. It stops intermittently
under high X load, such as when switching desktops, scrolling or similar
graphically intensive operations.
Actual Results:
In summary: I cannot upgrade my kernel beyond gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r2, unless I
want to forego either wireless LAN support or X

Expected Results:
It may be a good idea to bring back -r2, and patch it for the brk()-stuff, or to
fix the screaming video-card issue. I'll try a vanilla 2.4.22 kernel and see if
the problems persist. If so, it may be possible to narrow down the problem to
one of the gentoo-provided patches.

Also, what about vanilla 2.4.20?
Comment 2 John Mylchreest (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-02-01 18:23:10 UTC
unfortunately catering for this may be quite difficult.
there is of course no reason you can pull the correct ebuild from the web cvs and keep it in your portage overlay though.
Could you please test this out with newer 2.6 series if possible.
If you feel this is unreasonable, please re-open the bug and we shall re-visit.
