Description Craig Coleman 2011-01-08 15:21:52 UTC
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/paul/
I've installed chromium 9.0.597.45 (0)with QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.4
Gecko Media Player 1.0.0. The trailers crash.
I can play :
http://craigcoleman.com/movies/Theresa%20Andersson%20-%20High%20Low%20[www.keepvid.com].mov
and http://craigcoleman.com/movies/youtube-keepvid.mov

I am going to clear my preferences and try again.

wc@azzerare ~/.config $ ls
Thunar          chromium           gnome-disk-utility  gtk-2.0       totem
Trolltech.conf  enchant            gnome-mplayer       inkscape      vlc
autostart       gecko-mediaplayer  gnome-session       monitors.xml

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/paul/
2.show trailers
3.

Actual Results:
gecko crashes in chromium but not firefox

Expected Results:
The video should show. It does in Firefox with gecko

Great! Could you capture a backtrace? See http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxDebugging for some tips.
Comment 3 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2011-01-11 01:56:04 UTC
Ok, so I tried to get a backtrace by running it like this:

chromium --plugin-launcher='konsole -e gdb --args'

However, it seems that the gecko-mediaplayer plugin spawns a child process and runs "gnome-mplayer" to do the heavy lifting. gnome-mplayer is the one that is crashing. I cannot figure out how to debug it. Any ideas?

glibc produces a very minimal backtrace:

*** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/gnome-mplayer: double free or corruption (!prev): 0x0000000000ac1ea0 ***

That's still useful info. I wonder then why it doesn't crash for Firefox. Anyway, here's a link that might help: http://sourceware.org/gdb/onlinedocs/gdb/Forks.html

> glibc produces a very minimal backtrace:
>

That kind of crash in an independent process would suggest a bug in gnome-mplayer (maybe somehow exposed by interaction with chromium).
Comment 5 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2011-01-21 20:26:47 UTC
I tried various combinations of follow-fork-mode and follow-exec-mode along with stepping through the code a couple of ways; the plugin forks several times and I can't figure out where/if it is calling exec(gnome-mplayer).

I will revisit this if I ever get bored enough to care again. :)
Comment 6 Julien Sanchez archtester 2011-02-22 17:00:50 UTC
I reproduce the problem with following command:
chromium --plugin-launcher='xterm -lf /tmp/xterm.log -l -e gdb --args'

I don't know if there's a better method but I have 2 logs for this problem:

xterm.log attachment is the main output with the original backtrace:

*** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/gnome-mplayer: corrupted double-linked list: 0x0000000000a44800 ***
======= Backtrace: =========
/lib/libc.so.6(+0x738c6)[0x7ffff50158c6]
/lib/libc.so.6(+0x75360)[0x7ffff5017360]
/lib/libc.so.6(cfree+0x6c)[0x7ffff501a64c]
//usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.260.19.36(+0x8bb)[0x7fffeed618bb]

and geckomediaplayer.log attachment is the final failure's backtrace logged by gdb.

Please note that in xterm.log, the plugin seems to try to play different sources before failing.

Comment 9 Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-12 15:29:06 UTC
Reproduced here (chromium-12.0.742.21).

www-plugins/gecko-mediaplayer-1.0.0  USE="-gnome"
www-client/chromium-12.0.742.21  USE="cups test xinerama -gnome -gnome-keyring -kerberos"

Steps:

1. chromium --plugin-launcher='xterm -e gdb --args'
2. Visit http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/paul/
3. Click "Watch Now"
4. Type "run"+enter in the gdb window that opens.

Now it gets tricky. You might get the "glibc detected" error, and it has a mostly non-symbolized backtrace (and it's child gnome-mplayer process crashing). However, I was able to get a stack trace in gdb with the crashed plugin (it's a chromium process with plugin loaded into it). It seems that scrolling the webpage before gnome-mplayer crashes triggers it more reliably (not 100%, but more like 75%):

This CPlugin::SetWindow call is gecko-mediaplayer:

http://code.google.com/p/gecko-mediaplayer/source/browse/tags/v1.0.0/src/plugin.cpp#583

And then there are lots of glib assertions in the output:

(gnome-mplayer:17398): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strrstr: assertion `haystack != NULL' failed

(gnome-mplayer:17398): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strlcpy: assertion `src != NULL' failed

(gnome-mplayer:17398): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strlcpy: assertion `src != NULL' failed
Window resized

The plugin doesn't crash for me in Firefox, but it seems to have problems playing the video (it jumped to the beginning or random point a few times).

Based on that info, it seems that the problem is rather on the gecko-mediaplayer side, although running in the chromium's plugin process somehow triggers the flaw. Also, based on the data gathered so far we can't really rule out a bug in the browser.

I'd suggest submitting the bug report upstream (probably to gecko-mediaplayer first).
