Hi, would it be possible to add the official linux kernel version to the slot for each gentoo-sources version? This would it make easier to check, if the system uses the newest kernel just by looking at the slot. Slotname could be: ($gentoo_sources_version / $official_linux_kernel_version) Thanks in advance.
Could you explain better? You mean the one with fourth version component?
output of eix gentoo-sources [I] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources Available versions: $kernels_removed_thats_enough (2.6.36-r4) (~)2.6.36-r4!b!s (2.6.36-r5) 2.6.36-r5!b!s (2.6.36-r6) (~)2.6.36-r6!b!s (2.6.37) (~)2.6.37!b!s my idea would look like: eix gentoo-sources [I] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources Available versions: $kernels_removed_thats_enough (2.6.36-r4 - vanilla 2.6.36.1) (~)2.6.36-r4!b!s (2.6.36-r5 - vanilla 2.6.36.2) 2.6.36-r5!b!s (2.6.36-r6 - vanilla 2.6.36.2) (~)2.6.36-r6!b!s (2.6.37 - vanilla 2.6.37) (~)2.6.37!b!s
You may try to convince the kernel team to add the fourth component to the version part (and thus the slot) but the thing you ask for is not going to happen for the following reasons: 1) we prefer short SLOTs (and for kernel packages, we just copy PVR), 2) SLOTs can't contain special characters.
Well, you can always follow this http://dev.gentoo.org/~mpagano/genpatches/releases.htm or check yourself inside the genpatches, or follow the gentoo-kernel mailing list, but your request has some sanity so, I'm assigning it to the proper team. This cannot be handled via SLOT technology, but maybe via a new variable (if there isn't already one, inside kernel-2 eclass) or something. Thank you for your report.
Sometimes, the genpatches contains multiple linux versions.
Right now we will not be slotting the kernels.
