What emerge command line did you execute, and what is the full output (with -v)?
Stoian, you need to make sure that the flags "embedded" and "static" have the same value for virtual/mysql and dev-db/mysql, otherwise it will try to force mariadb down your throat. dev, please remove dev-db/mysql-community from the virtual/mysql-5.1 ebuild as it no longer exists and maybe elog some info regarding the use flags that need to be matched.
Thanks Stefan! Matching flags fixed this issue :)
