Solved: I had a reference to uvesafb in my kernel command line. Removed, and now all works just fine. Old, not working line (from /boot/grub/menu.lst): kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.37-git root=/dev/sda5 video=uvesafb:1680x1050-32,mtrr:3,ywrap New line: kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.37-git root=/dev/sda5
