This configure warning could be the cause:

configure: WARNING: The current version of GNU TLS cannot be made thread-safe.

Created attachment 258672 [details, diff]
cups-1.4.5-update-threads-support

This should resolve the issues completely.

Has a typo and the message is worthy of at least elog.
Comment 4 Timo Gurr (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-01-13 02:03:23 UTC
This should work again in cups-1.4.6 thanks to patches from Fedora, leaving this bug open until it's fixed upstream.
Comment 5 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2012-04-05 18:53:26 UTC
Is fixed since 1.5.0
