Version 41.28.5.1 is available at http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads. I tried to modify the ebuild existing in the tree (just by modifying the SRC_URI and the version for the doins) and the installation of the firmware works. The problem is that the wireless kernel driver in the latest kernel release in the tree (2.6.36-r5) looks for the old version of the firmware (i.e. iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode) rather than the new iwlwifi-6050-5.ucode, so the network card does not work. Is it possible to set the firmware version somehow? Would a symlink work as a (dirty) workaround? Reproducible: Always
So a couple of things need to happen, let's patch the kernel 2.6.36 and see how things work with the new firmware for a few days. Then, after a few days of testing, I'll add the patch to gentoo-sources for .36. Also, the ebuild will have to check kernel version and die on < gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r6 I have this hardware, so I can do the testing myself. Your experiences with the new firmware is also appreciated.
new gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r6 released with patch that can use iwl6050-41.28.5.1. iwl6050-41.28.5.1 also release in portage tree. I will follow up to get this kernel patch upstream so the gentoo-sources dependency is not needed.
Updated kernel and firmware, everything seems to be working perfectly fine.. Thank you!
